Wes Edens, the founder of New Fortress Energy, has continued his sports investment by investing in the Basketball Africa League (BAL). When asked why he would choose to invest in the BAL, his simple answer was that he is a sports nerd. Not only does Edens play in a variety of different sports, but sports is what he loves.
He explains that he does not have an interest in collecting art or anything else. Investing in sports is a big deal; it makes sense on a business level as well, according to Wes Edens.
Edens is not interested in further advancing the NBA but instead, creating an independent league. There are plenty of teams, but step one is to get this league up and running. To do that, teams from 12 countries will come together to create the framework and determine the leagues’ structure.
Edens founded the investment for BAL through his company, New Fortress Energy. New Fortress Energy is focusing on markets that Edens feels need their assistance. The continent requires reliable power, and at the same time, it is a reliable resource for gas. Edens believes that while tapping into the gas resources, they can also be building power plants for domestic use. According to Edens, Africa is a continent of opportunity.
Some challenges will need to be met moving forward. One of the biggest challenges is infrastructure. It is hard for people to travel from one place to another. However, as young people get involved, this certainly can be a gateway for those young players to move on to the NBA. It is too early to tell what the BAL will look like down the road, but the possibilities of creating something great are there.
